The most memorable characters in novels and films are those who are great at transforming themselves. I remember first seeing Edward Norton in Primal Fear where he portrayed a man accused of murder. Not until the very end (Spoiler Alert) do viewers discover he became someone else in order to convince everyone, including his own attorney, that he was innocent.
There are stories written about sweet and romantic men who act one way in public while turning into someone entirely different behind closed doors. Same could be said about female characters who seem to have multiple personalities depending on who they’re with. Remember Bridget Jones and how she kept transforming herself into who she thought others wanted her to be? It’s an age old story, really.
This image of Cinderella and Prince Charming is not unlike the image of the characters we just described. At least in public, this fairy-tale “couple” must play the role built around the happy ever after ending we all know. But what happens when their costumes come off and their make-up is removed?
