What do you do when you’re not paying attention?
Interesting prompt. Ok, let me spin this question a bit, so I can answer it accurately. How about something like, what is it I’m doing that makes me not pay attention.
I’m on my phone. Just like 102% of Americans, my phone is the main thing that wins my attention every time. See, here’s the thing. It’s so easy for me to convince myself that it’s really quite non-committal. My phone dings, and I know that logistically, it will only take me a matter of seconds to read the text. Which is indeed true.
The problem comes from me deciding to take a few more seconds to respond and if nobody needs my attention at that very moment, I’ll check my email really, really, really quickly, which actually turns out to be a 5-10 minute process because inevitably, I have numerous emails that have come in that need tending to.
I put my phone down, because I am jolted that I just spent 10 minutes on something that should have taken seconds.
I pay attention to whatever I was supposed to be attending to.
Wait, I haven’t checked Facebook lately, and I have an alert that 6 tweets have come in for me. No biggie, I can just check my notifications. And really, what’s it hurt to scroll really fast?
Oh, email again.
I also should probably check Google maps to see how long it’s gonna take to get to my meeting tomorrow. Hey, my favorite friend just texted. It would be rude to not answer her immediately…
Do you see where I am going here?
That’s what’s happening to make me NOT pay attention. I mean, otherwise you’d have my full attention becau…
ding, Ding, DING!!
I gotta check who’s texting me. Are we done here?
