In my nights away from home this past week and during flights, I buried myself into a book and finished it within a few days. I wondered after I completed the book where I would be without the experiences I’ve lived because of these books. There are books that simply entertain and then there are those that rock your world and change your perception on everything because for a certain amount of time you existed in a different world.
Taking the plunge into someone else’s self talk is top on my list for entrancing enjoyment and never once have I walked away unchanged. Even more, I wondered…. Does the body know the difference between having the actual experience and then living it through someone else’s words? Like, if I’m feeling cathartic based on the development of a story or if I’m feeling the rush of a character under high stakes, is my body experiencing it any different than if it were actually happening in real life?
The mind is so commanding and forceful. If I can allow myself to feel nervous or afraid about something that isn’t real, my guess is that my body doesn’t know the difference between what is real and what isn’t. We’ve heard that you create your own reality. We get lost in our emotions and forget what is truth and what our imagination is making us believe to be true. You can use this to work for you or against you.
Just a little Monday reminder that we get to choose how we experience.
