As a writer, I am always searching for an idea. I am overly aware of other people’s traits. I remember every situation I encounter and the details associated with it. You really can’t bluff or lie. I remember it all. Because somewhere I am taking notes on how great a scene it will be in my next short story, script or novel. I have these moments just about every other day and man am I grateful because writing is what helps me get life all sorted out in my brain.
The most productive I become with writing and the most dents I make in a book (like recently) is when I become obsessed about something. It’s on my mind A LOT. It’s meaningful to me and I can’t just let it go. I must make sense of it and it must have an impact, even if to the stray cat on the street.
Let’s be real. We are all obsessed about something. Even if it’s a little obsession, our minds get consumed with something going on in our lives that we are trying to make sense of.
When you can’t think of what to write, think… What am I consistently thinking about? A day doesn’t go by without me thinking of….
Oh wait, I know what you’re going to say. “But, I can’t let people know about that? That’s super private and people will judge.”
My thoughts on that… that’s the best thing to write about. If it’s that important to you, I promise there are other humans on the planet that find it equally important and they are scared to talk about it as well. I’ve got some things that will definitely cause a stir once they come out. There will be certain people saying, “Wait, is she writing about me? That’s me!”
Thank you to the saints and to the assholes who have shown up in my life. It’s because of you, I get to figure shit out.
What are you obsessed with right now? Go ahead, take a risk and write it.
